The 315-ton press typically produces nuts ranging from M48 to M60, with individual nuts weighing anywhere from ten to several dozen kilograms. While standard nuts rely on thread engagement to bear loads, large nuts depend on the shear and compressive strength of the entire metal cross-section, resulting in tensile strengths far exceeding those of cold-headed parts of the same size.
Capable of complex shapes: Hot forging is not limited to standard hex nuts. Thickened nuts, flanged nuts, slotted nuts, stepped nuts, and irregular-shaped nuts—as long as the die can be manufactured, hot forging can form them in a single operation. Cold heading becomes difficult for sizes above M36, especially for complex shapes.
Wide range of material compatibility: Hot forging can process carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, and heat-resistant steel. In particular, high-strength alloy steels (such as 40Cr and 35CrMo) are nearly impossible to form via cold heading and must be produced through hot forging. This is why critical fasteners in heavy industry are almost exclusively hot-forged components.
